Incorporating Algebra Habits of Mind

In previous years I taught Algebra and Pre-Algebra. This year I am teaching 7th
Grade Math. It has been critical for me to introduce algebraic thinking to my students
so they will be prepared for the upcoming year. The principal in algebraic thinking I
introduced and they sort of understand is doing and undoing. I will continue this all year long.

  1. I have used the concepts in Algebraic Habits of Mind in several different ways in my classroom. When I ask questions my goal is to deepen my students understanding of the concepts. I try to recap questions to several students so that I'm not just asking questions and moving on. I want to reach as many students as possible to make sure that the concepts are understood. I try to make use of the doing and undoing method, so students understand the material more thoroughly. The various aspects of Algebraic Thinking enables me to teach my students by adapting mathematics in a broader range of algebra learning goals. Using various problem solving methods and helping students to look for patterns also helps students to analyze problems and increase their ability to understand more complex concepts.
