"CAMTing We will Go" Activity Follow Up

1. Looking back over the work you did today in the "CAMTing We Will Go Activity" think about the different options you came up with for the cost of attending the CAMT Conference in Houston. Provide a summary your travel plans.

2. Also, include in your summary a detailed projected itemized budget even if it exceeds the $500. If your budget does exceed the allotted amount then provide suggestions or request from your peers for suggestions on how you could cut your budget.

    2. You can still eat like a royal on less than $71 a day. You just may come out the best at being under $500. It is awesome that you have a friend to stay with.

    1. Whoa! Have you figured out how you are going to lower your cost? I am very surprised by your total. I seriously doubt that you will spend that much on food. Good luck.

  7. For CAMT, I am riding with Nicole Marks to Houston. I expect to cover 2 nights lodging of $300.00 ($150.00 per night), the third night will be paid by my roommate. I expect will use $269.00 for food Tuesday – Friday. My registration fee of $95.00 was paid by my school.
    Lodging - $300.00
    Food - $ 269.00
    Total - $569.00
    Since my budget exceeds the reimbursed amount I will either use a little of my own cash or eat less. I am also looking at hotels a little further out.

    1. Cathryn,
      Have you all decided who the lucky driver will be? Where are you all staying for such a low rate? I think that it will be really hard to eat $71 worth of food. I was a little afraid to ask my principal if he would be willing to pay and much to my surprise he said yes! I guess it does not hurt to ask. It sure did save my budget. Also I got a great hotel rate. See you in July!

    Total: $ 587.5

    Even if I tried, I doubt I could eat $71 worth of food each day. My budget will easily be under $500:)

  14. 1. Constants are $95 for registration, $71 food per diem two days and $40 for the first day. I would only do dinner the first day. This is equal to $277 when subtracted from the $500 leaves me $223 for my variables(transportation/lodging). I found a flight on Southwest for $120 dollars round-trip, which is less expensive than driving (460 miles @$0.55 per mile $253) An assumption I made was that the hotel I would stay at provided transportion to/from the airport and conference center is free. I now only have $103 to spend on a hotel. The cheapest hotel I foulnd cost $59 per night with local taxes comes to $65 for two nights I would bring my total to $527.
    2. The best way for me to keep my cost under $500 dollars is to share a room with one of my classmates.

    1. If you are a TSTA member, you can stay at Red Roof Inn for less than $50/night. If you sign p now, it is free until October, so you could use that discount. Maybe that will help.

    3. Hello Joe,

      In an effort to save a little bit of money try and secure a tax exempt permit either from the school you teach at or through UNT's XTREEM Algebra PD program. You should be able to to have state taxes deducted/refunded to you with proper documentation from the conference for your airline ticket and your hotel cost.

  15. What I noticed was that the majority of us can not keep it under $500. We need to work together with one another to do this. This is something we will have to do when we are together at UNT. I don't feel I have all the answers for what we are going to be learning this year, but I know when we all put our heads together, we will be able to do a lot more.

    1. Joe, I love your enthusiasm! You are absolutely right; we need to start thinking like a team that is ready to take on the obstacles that will face us, not just for CAMT but for the rest of the year, as we navigate this XTreem program. Thanks for the inspiration :)

    1. My buddy and I briefly thought about presenting, but it was too short of notice for us to get anything worth while together and submitted. That is a goal that I have for later, probably after I have been teaching a few more years and feel I have some really valuable information to share. I can't wait to learn what your presentation is about... I am going to go look it up online now :)

  18. $95.00 - CAMT Registration Fee
    $287.71 - Travel from Plano, TX to Houston, TX = 518.40 @ $0.555/mile {Thanks IRS}
    $235.11 - Lodging at Baymount Inn & Suites {breakfast included w/stay}
    $0.00 - Estimating overage from my Travel to apply toward lunch and dinner
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    $617.82 - TOTAL
    -$500.00 - XTREEM Reimbursement
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    $117.82* - Projected to be out of pocket

    *Dropping the Cost of My Out-of-Pocket Expenses:

    >15% reimbursement on lodging and car rental from my LifeStyles Perks Rewards Program.

    >exempt from state taxes for my rental car & hotel lodging --- I will have the following documents at my rental car pick-up and at hotel check-in: CAMT Conference information (explanation of conference from website, confirmation of registration in my e-mail, a copy of my school's Tax Permit, and my school ID)

    This will probably still leave me with some out-of-pocket expenses; however, it will be a great deal less than what is currently projected.

    1. Wow, how convenient for you to have family in the area! Those hotel costs really eat away at a $500 budget quickly. If it weren't for having a buddy going with me, I wouldn't be able to come anywhere close to budget.
